Job Duties:

  • Provides surgical patient care activities.
  • Transports patients, and related records to and from the OR and recovery room.
  • Assists nursing staff with preoperative patient preparation activities.
  • Helps with routing medical materiel management activities.
  • Accomplishes routine safety checks and operator preventive maintenance on fixed and moveable medical equipment and fixtures.
  • Performs routine and specialized housekeeping activities. Prepares OR for surgery by setting up and opening sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Assists anesthesia personnel with patient positioning and anesthesia administration.
  • Applies principles of asepsis, infection control, and medical ethics.
  • Assists with terminal cleanup of OR and prepares for follow-up procedures.
  • Receives, decontaminates, and cleans soiled patient care items.
  • Stores, maintains, and distributes sterile patient care items.
  • Assists the circulating nurse with preparing records, reports, and requests.
  • Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory.
  • Performs scrub duties in operating room.
  • Performs recovery room or basic nursing duties.
  • Performs general clinic functions.
  • Attends in-service training in new procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Assists physicians with patient care; properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods; assists in preparation for and application of casts and 12 orthopedic appliances; changes dressings; removes sutures, casts, and splints.
  • Maintains clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; orders special supplies and/or equipment.
  • Coordinates data collection resources for the clinic information systems.
  • Performs clinic cast room duties.
  • Develops and maintains aseptic techniques where required during cast
    changes/applications and/or removals.
  • Will be responsible for independently applying the full range of casts and traction devices.
  • Performs basic orthopedic clinic duties.
  • Performs surgical duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Completion of the following:

  • Must have knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and
    physiology; principles of asepsis and sterile techniques; preparing and storing surgical sets and packs, surgical instrumentation, and equipment; OR and anesthesia procedures; pathology as it applies to specimen care and handling; basic microbiology and infection control principles; basic surgical pharmacology; sterilizing and disinfecting procedures; surgical and anesthesia complications and their treatment; hospital and OR environmental hazards and safety procedures; handling and storage of compressed gases; basic medical material procedures; basic medical administrations procedures; legal aspects of preoperative care and medical ethics; roles and qualifications of surgical team members;
    and basic clinical functions. Completion of a surgical technologist program recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or military equivalent course. Completion of an accredited basic orthopedic course. Completion of an accredited surgical service and clinical course.

Experience:  Candidates must have the following experience:

  • Two years of related experience in an accredited health care hospital and at
    least 2 years of experience as an orthopedic cast/brace technician and minimum 2 years of orthopedic surgical scrub experience.

Security:

  • National Background
  • Must be US Citizen
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work site

 License/Certification and Training:

  • Requires current CPR/BLS certification from an American Heart Association organization.
  • Maintain a national certification by American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) or National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists. (NBCOT) or Association of Surgical Technologist Certification (AST) or Certification of Surgical Technologist (CST).

Schedule:

  • 7:30A.M - 4:30P.M
  • Rotating shifts may be required
  • Alternating shifts may be required
  • No more than 40 hrs per week
