Job Duties:
Different departments:

  • Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program/OASIS PTSD Residential Treatment Program, Inpatient Adult Outpatient, Miramar Mental Health, Naval Station Mental Health, Child Guidance Clinic
    On-call
    Call back (Inpatient)
  • Inpatient Care for Acute Psychiatric and Intermediate Units
    Assist in initial intake assessments and triage interviews.
    Assist in counseling and orient patients to the unit procedures and policies.
  • Perform ward searches; monitor use of dangerous items.  Answer telephone calls and relay pertinent information to providers if required.
    Assist in a variety of treatment modalities including but not limited to biofeedback, stress management, and group therapy.
    Coordinate and perform routine training in prevention and management of assaultive behavior.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Perform routine ward procedures for admission, discharges, and patient transfers.
  • Monitor patient safety; be able to do physical restraint procedures such as applying manual and mechanical restraints.
  • Manage agitated patients; identify and report symptoms of homicidal or suicidal patient; perform line of sight one-on-one observations.
  • Understand the rules of confidentiality as applies to patient and health care provider during all aspects of care; instruct personnel in psychiatric patient rights.
  • Outpatient Care
  • Perform ongoing risk assessment; assist in maintaining therapeutic milieu
    Transcribe physician’s orders
  • Develop a therapeutic relationship with psychiatric patients; observe patient progress during treatment
  • Organize and facilitate patient groups and activities
  • Escort patients safely on and off the unit, know the patient management for elopement risks; take patients out on field trips
  • Monitor patient safety; be able to do physical restraint procedures such as applying manual and mechanical restraints
  • Manage agitated patients; identify and report symptoms of homicidal or suicidal patient; perform line of sight one-on-one observations.
    Maintain all records required on patients to include data entry and retrieval on CHCS and CIS computer systems.
  • Perform a range of diagnostic support duties which include but is not limited to drawing blood for lab studies; collect and label specimens; take vital signs; and assist the doctor in a variety of diagnostic examinations.
    Understand the rules of confidentiality as applied to patient and health care provider during all aspects of care; instruct personnel in psychiatric patient rights.
  • Respond to emergency situations within area of competence and initiate appropriate action and documentation (restraint calls, fire calls, and disaster situations).
  • Monitor and discontinue IV fluids as directed if certified.
  • Operate the outpatient front desk areas; assist patients with questions and information; offer courteous and attentive assistance. Follow the Command’s mission and values of Service, Professionalism, Teamwork, Respect, and Compassion.
  • Schedule patient appointments through the CHCS computer system. Coordinate and assist the Primary Care Provider in contacting patients who miss appointments

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

Completion of the following:

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent too

Experience: Candidates must have the following experience:

  • Have a minimum of 12 months of experience within the last 18 months with clinical psychiatric experience.

Security:

  • National Background
  • Must be US Citizen
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work site

License/Certification and Training:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) from the American Heart Association.
  • Possess at least a level one national Psychiatric Technician certification or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician in any one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands; AND possess at least a level one national Psychiatric Technician certification or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse/ Licensed Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) in any one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands

Psychiatric Tech, Mental Health Department, Inpatient

  • Sunday – Saturday (Federal Holidays included)
  • 1:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. (8-12/hour shifts (1/hour unpaid lunch))

Psychiatric Tech, Mental Health Dept, Substance Abuse Rehab Program/OASIS PTSD Residential Treatment Program

  • Sunday – Saturday (Federal Holidays included)
  • 7:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. (8-12/hour shifts (1/hour unpaid lunch))
  • On call (call rotation) after hours
  • Not to exceed 3 days per month, includes 1 weekend day per month
  • Sunday – Saturday
  • 7:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M. OR 7:00 P.M. – 7:00 A.M.
  • Call back (inpatient)
    12/hour shift period

Psychiatric Tech, NMCSD and BHCs

  • Monday – Friday (Federal Holidays required)
  • 6:30 A.M. – 7:30 P.M. (8-12/hour shifts (1/hour unpaid lunch)
